COUNSELING FOR ATHLETES,  COMPETITORS AND THE GIFTED

Athletic Counseling is not just for the professional athlete. Athletic Counseling is designed for people who want to grow mentally just as an athlete grows physically.  An athlete in any sport  knows that progress does not come over night. The same rule applies to your mental, emotional and phychological needs.  Athletic Counseling takes the same aspects of physical training and spins it into mental health therapy. Incorporating many techniques coaches use on the field for mental and physical performance. We do the same thing focussing on your mental well being. 

Working with gifted individuals does not only apply to the field. Gifted children and adults that do not have the proper help can often times be looked at or diagnosed as having other issues. At Athletic Counseling I dive into the root of the issue and do not foccuss on the symptoms.

Meet the Counselor

MEET THE COUNSELOR

My name is Justin Roth and I am certified clinical mental health counselor. I have dedicated his time, energy and education to the study of counseling, athletic mind set & mental health. It is my belief that no one is able achieve their goals on their own. Professional athletes have coaches, trainers and advocates. I specialize in working with teens and young adults who are working through their identity, motivations and anxieties. Wheather is as serious as greiving a death, legal troubles or simply just needing an unbias voice to speak with I am happy to talk and listen with anyone who is looking for help.

Individual sessions help improve their mindset and/or deal with any psychological/emotional concerns that may be impacting their performance, health, and/or well-being. Many people deal with a lot of pressure, performance anxiety, mental blocks or loss of confidence. At Athletic Counseling, we individualize each session. We work clients to build a strong mindset that is not only applicable in sport, but also in many areas in life. Common topics include, but are not limited to: anxiety, confidence, consistency, depression, energy management, general mental health issues, goal setting, imagery, leadership, mindful behavior, motivation, recruiting, relaxation techniques, team roles, transitions, translating practice performance into game performance, values, and visualization.
 

Individual Sessions

Group or team meetings are efficient and engaging ways to bring mindset training to a group of athletes and/or coaches. They can provide athletes with individualized skills training, awareness on group/team dynamics, and tools to foster a culture and supportive environment among the team. Team settings are experiential and interactive, benefitting athletes as they are able to learn from each other. Sessions allow teams to explore group concepts such as trust, team dynamics, leadership, team values, and team norms. Each session is highly customized, with our sport counselors getting upfront input from the coaching staff or management team. Group or team sessions can include athletes and/or coaches, depending on the group.

Having Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) means that an individual struggles with focusing and paying attention, and possibly struggles with hyperactive and impulsive behavior

Feeling anxious and nervous isn't always a bad thing, but when it starts effecting your day to day interactions it can become debilitating.

Without a purpose it is difficult to navigate through all the ups and downs that life throws at us. We will discuss long and short term goals and figure out hot we can get your goals from thoughts to action. 

Injuries take their toll on the body, but also could have an effect on our mental game as well. Making sure that you are recovering properly and safely is paramount to getting back to where you want to be.

THE MENTAL GYM

The gym has become a place where people work their bodies. The mental gym is a metaphorical place in all of us where "Mental Work" takes place. We all have a need to work inside of us where we go to decompress, think, reflect and do work.  Sometimes we need help building, finding or opening our mental gym and learning what kind of work can be done.

Workshops and presentations aim to educate athletes, teams, coaches, parents, athletic trainers, and sport medicine personnel on topics related to mindset training techniques and athlete mental health. Examples might include: stress-management; anger management; leadership development; communication skills; performance anxiety; increasing athlete motivation; the psychology of teams; overcoming mental blocks; dealing with frustration; building confidence, spotting and addressing general mental health problems in athletes (e.g., depression, anxiety, eating disorders, adjustment problems, substance abuse, etc.); managing suicide or self-harm crisis and response; coping with injury; and preventing psychological problems.
